WEBVTT 1 00:00:04.200 --> 00:00:12.390 WLWV Board Room: I'd like to call to order tonight's meeting of the Weslen Wilsonville School District School Board, and with that I'll ask Miss Douglas to call the role. 2 00:00:12.450 --> 00:00:20.889 WLWV Board Room: Certainly. Director, shoemaker, director, sloop here. Vice Chair Wyatt. Here Director Vidal. 3 00:00:21.030 --> 00:00:22.730 WLWV Board Room: here. Thank you. 4 00:00:27.400 --> 00:00:34.860 WLWV Board Room: Going to jump right into our board member reports and our superintendent reports. So director, shoemaker, why don't you get us started? 5 00:00:35.390 --> 00:00:44.579 WLWV Board Room: I think you'll keep it pretty brief. It being july, August. I had a community member ask me about 6 00:00:45.250 --> 00:00:52.380 WLWV Board Room: schools and II decided to do some walkabouts. So I was able to walk 7 00:00:53.210 --> 00:00:55.360 WLWV Board Room: around every primary. 8 00:00:56.350 --> 00:01:08.709 And and it was, it was interesting to do that. It was interesting to have that experience. It's been a long time since I've been to all of our primary. So we I very much enjoyed that. It's amazing how many of our children are at our primaries 9 00:01:08.730 --> 00:01:20.930 on playgrounds and adjacent spaces during during the summer. Was and with with Director Vidal I was at the Osba Conference this past weekend. 10 00:01:21.840 --> 00:01:29.640 WLWV Board Room: Very good stuff. Glad I went, looking forward to November's conference and I'll keep a pinder with that 11 00:01:31.730 --> 00:01:32.810 WLWV Board Room: director. Sleep. 12 00:01:34.740 --> 00:01:36.110 WLWV Board Room: I'll yield my time. 13 00:01:39.950 --> 00:02:04.280 WLWV Board Room: Thank you so much. Like Director Shoemaker mentioned. We're at the Oregon School Board Association Conference, where I really learned intensively about my duties as a School Board member, and I was able to meet many school board members throughout Clackamas County in the State of Oregon. So that was that was so nice. Meeting people and making new friends. 14 00:02:04.280 --> 00:02:18.310 I am really looking forward to attending our back to school resource event this Wednesday. And I'm also looking forward to attending the screening of Forget me not next Wednesday as well. 15 00:02:18.310 --> 00:02:41.729 WLWV Board Room: Ii got to meet our brand new principal at Lowry, and we're so excited to have Principal Freeman. It was it was really great to see all the parents and families there with a very long line to meet her, so I hope she felt very welcomed. We're so happy to see her there and then I just wanna give a huge shout out 16 00:02:41.730 --> 00:02:48.609 to our teachers and our families as we all get ready to go back to school at the end of the month. 17 00:02:48.610 --> 00:02:49.650 WLWV Board Room: and that's it. 18 00:02:50.980 --> 00:03:05.480 WLWV Board Room: And just as a note Director Taylor, chair, Taylor is out on excused absence. This evening. Which is why I'm running the meeting. And so we hope he's having a nice and enjoyable vacation. My only updates. 19 00:03:05.480 --> 00:03:30.280 I attended the long range planning committee meeting at the end of last month and have really enjoyed my time as a liaison to that committee. It's just amazing to see the work that we've made on all of bond projects. We've had a chance to tour the new Wilsonville Theater, most of the High School theater. If you haven't had a chance to go and look at that space yet. I mean, it's just phenomenal. And I think one thing that's really exciting about it is 20 00:03:30.280 --> 00:03:30.850 is. 21 00:03:30.850 --> 00:03:57.389 WLWV Board Room: in addition to just being a wonderfully equipped theater. There's also so many career and technical education opportunities that go along with that space in terms of lighting and set design and costumes. And so just really thinking about the educational opportunities that these major capital projects bring is really exciting. One of the emphasis points from that meeting is that yes, the new Ap Creek 22 00:03:57.390 --> 00:04:24.850 Middle School, and yes, the new Riverside High School are going to open in their brand new locations. We had heard that there were some rumblings amongst students like, oh, they won't be open in time. And so there was just this reinforcement that yes, these great new schools are, gonna be open and so talk through the information sharing plan. That the team has in place to make sure that all of our kids go into those 2 new facilities. Nowhere to go on the first day. So that was really exciting. 23 00:04:24.850 --> 00:04:30.870 WLWV Board Room: And then have been doing some retreat, prom planning with Chair Taylor. So the School Board has 24 00:04:30.870 --> 00:04:37.720 a retreat once a year, and we typically do that in August. So we're planning for our retreat later this month 25 00:04:37.720 --> 00:05:02.060 WLWV Board Room: and looking forward to it being a really great chance for the 5 of us to work together. And we're really gonna focus on creating some board goals. But then also really defining some of the work session topics that we'll explore in this next year, and then also just areas where each of us individually would like to meet with the superintendent for fireside chats and to continue to grow our own knowledge. And so 26 00:05:02.250 --> 00:05:15.389 WLWV Board Room: Looking forward to that, and I'm I'm sure that by our next meeting we'll all have a report out on how that retreat went. So huge thanks in advance to our staff to who are helping us put that together. So those are all of my updates. 27 00:05:17.690 --> 00:05:23.540 WLWV Board Room: Superintendent report. Thank you. Got my Powerpoint queueing up. Thank you, Curtis. 28 00:05:25.890 --> 00:05:34.139 WLWV Board Room: So usually I have a kind of a slide for the year. This is the one that you'll become familiar with, and I'll talk a little bit about our theme elevate in a little bit. 29 00:05:34.270 --> 00:05:50.529 WLWV Board Room: Next slide. So just an overview of what's happening in August. Some of you have already mentioned some of those events, we did kick off the month with our district. Wide leadership retreat. So all the leaders in the district, whether they're leading a school or a department. 30 00:05:50.570 --> 00:05:55.830 We meet together annually. We set the the vision for the year. 31 00:05:55.930 --> 00:06:04.859 WLWV Board Room: kind of more at a 60,000 foot level. Some of the the large rocks in terms of the work that we want to get accomplished, and we had that retreat to kick off. 32 00:06:05.180 --> 00:06:14.010 WLWV Board Room: We are in the process this month of having a number of curriculum camps going on. They're actually happening this week. So 33 00:06:14.160 --> 00:06:36.570 WLWV Board Room: right now, there's a primary literacy curriculum camp going on. I'll talk about that a little bit later, as I give you an update on our K 5 literacy renewal process. But we have 60 teachers staff over at Meridian Creek. Engaged all day, and they will be between now and Thursday. So the fourteenth, 15, and seventeenth in a 4 day. Camp 34 00:06:36.810 --> 00:06:50.710 WLWV Board Room: we have a middle school. Collaborative curriculum planning camp going on. It's gonna start tomorrow. August fifteenth and sixteenth at Rose want Ridge Middle school. This is Co. Planned with staff. 35 00:06:50.780 --> 00:06:56.570 WLWV Board Room: and it's for our middle school staff to come together and work on 36 00:06:56.870 --> 00:07:06.629 WLWV Board Room: math curriculum. As you know, we've adopted amplify math curriculum. So they're going to get some work with that as well as universal design for learning. 37 00:07:06.760 --> 00:07:17.919 WLWV Board Room: Again, these are optional camps for teachers, because they're not required to come in the summer, but when they do we? We provide these opportunities for them to start the year with some of this work under their belt. 38 00:07:18.530 --> 00:07:31.889 WLWV Board Room: We also have a high School collaborative curriculum planning camp going on. It's gonna start also tomorrow, the fifteenth and the Sixteenth called it Westland high school, and they're going to. As you know, they're moving into a new high school schedule. 39 00:07:31.900 --> 00:07:45.750 WLWV Board Room: And so this is a chance for them to think about those types of instructional practices that really maximize student engagement with this new high school schedule. So I wanna thank in particular, our teaching learning department. 40 00:07:45.800 --> 00:08:00.529 WLWV Board Room: a number of them who are here. Dr. Barb Soissen, Dr. David Pryor, Dr. Jennifer Spencer, Iams, and Dr. Lauren freaks bee as they put they give their input, into these curriculum camps and support. Our staff who are engaged in those 41 00:08:00.900 --> 00:08:12.950 WLWV Board Room: we have a number of department kickoffs that happen in August. Whether it's operations. Their 2 day orientation and training. That was last week. Nutrition services will have theirs coming up 42 00:08:13.050 --> 00:08:23.039 WLWV Board Room: this week is also administrative assistance are having theirs. Which is co-facilitated by Curtis, Nelson and ms. Kelly Douglas. 43 00:08:23.170 --> 00:08:36.050 WLWV Board Room: we have a new teacher. Orientation for those who nearly hired. We have new student services. Does a number of events for new teachers with special education as well as a student services kick off 44 00:08:36.059 --> 00:08:38.900 WLWV Board Room: you mentioned the Family Empowerment Center 45 00:08:38.919 --> 00:08:50.299 WLWV Board Room: Director Vidal. So that's happening this week as well. So August becomes kind of this busy getting everybody ready for school to start in terms of orientation trainings, workshops, 46 00:08:50.450 --> 00:09:05.289 WLWV Board Room: and kickoffs, and then, of course, you have the flyer about our free event for our community. So anybody watching, if you haven't heard about it yet look it up on the website, or contact, Andrew Killstrom. 47 00:09:05.400 --> 00:09:14.799 WLWV Board Room: This is a free event for the community. A showing of the documentary. Forget me not about it, family and their story with inclusion. 48 00:09:14.840 --> 00:09:22.659 WLWV Board Room: and the baroniers, who are the filmmakers as well as the parents, are going to be with us that evening, and we'll be able to be in a panel afterwards with us. 49 00:09:23.300 --> 00:09:34.390 WLWV Board Room: And then, of course, the following morning, all of the district employees, over 1,000 of us will gather for our welcome back Assembly to kick off the New Year together. 50 00:09:34.630 --> 00:09:35.979 WLWV Board Room: and school will start 51 00:09:36.050 --> 00:09:43.930 WLWV Board Room: on August 20 ninth. In all those spaces, current and new. So thank you for mentioning that, and a shout out to 52 00:09:44.070 --> 00:09:56.160 WLWV Board Room: all the contractors and the staff who are working so hard on those transitions and those moves of furniture and supplies, and getting staff where they need to be, and for school to start. 53 00:09:58.410 --> 00:10:00.429 WLWV Board Room: So 54 00:10:00.620 --> 00:10:03.790 WLWV Board Room: if you recall our theme last year was 55 00:10:04.240 --> 00:10:16.619 WLWV Board Room: belief and belonging. And we worked a lot on that idea of self-efficacy around belief and collective efficacy. And then a sense of belonging for students, staff families. 56 00:10:16.710 --> 00:10:20.220 WLWV Board Room: This year. Our theme is the word elevate 57 00:10:20.400 --> 00:10:31.390 WLWV Board Room: because we want to carry over all the good work we did last year, and not forget about the importance of belief and belonging. But this idea of how do we just take it to the next level? 58 00:10:31.480 --> 00:10:40.510 WLWV Board Room: How do we just raise it up a little more. Bring it to the forefront, and elevate our practice and our work. So 59 00:10:40.690 --> 00:11:03.020 WLWV Board Room: You got your bracelets that say elevate. We've got some journals. But you'll see us kind of work with this idea of places in our work this year where we can pay close attention. Move the work forward and and elevate outcomes as well as processes that help us to continue to be an exceptional school district, and one that the community deserves 60 00:11:05.170 --> 00:11:10.600 WLWV Board Room: in in our work with the center for educational leadership out of the University of Washington 61 00:11:10.670 --> 00:11:15.830 WLWV Board Room: we use this idea of how do we get better. How do we take stock of our current state? 62 00:11:15.880 --> 00:11:35.490 WLWV Board Room: And then this vision of the ideal state, and what are the actions to get there? So we oh, at our leadership retreat we use that notion of that's the work of elevating is moving from current state to ideal state, and making sure that those actionable steps along the way. Are ones that 63 00:11:35.500 --> 00:11:41.610 WLWV Board Room: get us the outcomes that we want to see with student achievement as well as instructional practices 64 00:11:42.800 --> 00:11:43.940 WLWV Board Room: next slide. 65 00:11:45.590 --> 00:11:56.920 WLWV Board Room: So we focused at our retreat. And this year we'll focus on, you know, there's a lot you could be working on. But we also want to hone in on a few ideas. So we talked about, how do we elevate 66 00:11:56.980 --> 00:12:13.979 WLWV Board Room: the student experience? In the classroom? Their access to learning, their sense of belonging, and also their connection to the learning. Is it meaningful engagement? So those are some areas that we'll focus on in terms of elevating the student experience this year. 67 00:12:14.220 --> 00:12:36.649 WLWV Board Room: And then how do we elevate the way we work together as teams? We know there's a lot of research around effective teaming. And what that does to impact student learning outcomes. So how do we take that? Also to the next level lot of opportunity? To think about that and to put some practices in place to build upon the good work that we're already doing, and just take it to the next level. 68 00:12:37.440 --> 00:12:50.170 WLWV Board Room: and then for our own professional growth as leaders. How do we continue to elevate our thinking so that we're constantly researching and reading and growing and thinking about ways that we can affect change as leaders. 69 00:12:53.100 --> 00:13:12.489 WLWV Board Room: So you saw kind of the the district logo of that half window? That is iconic to our district. It actually coincides with John hatties, dials or barometers of all the Meta research that he's done in his books, visible learning 70 00:13:12.530 --> 00:13:26.999 WLWV Board Room: around what practices do impact student outcomes. What are those ones that are high leverage? And what are those ones that? Yes, we can do them in the classroom, but unless they're in combination with a number of other things. They're not as 71 00:13:27.210 --> 00:13:46.339 WLWV Board Room: productive. And so his synthesis of 800 meta analysis. And actually, he's done an update with about 1,200 Meta analyses. Now, talks about moving the dial, so to speak. So that you get that effect size or that impact. That's in the zone of desired effects. 72 00:13:46.770 --> 00:13:51.689 WLWV Board Room: So our staff's gonna come back as we think about elevating our practice. 73 00:13:52.120 --> 00:14:16.310 WLWV Board Room: Not that we want to do more or in terms of running people ragged like. Oh, great! I spent a lot of time working on this. Now I have to do more to elevate. But how do we do it? Smarter? How do we look at things creatively, or maybe more judiciously, or with some precision? So it's not necessarily adding more to people's plates, but thinking about what's on the plate. 74 00:14:16.410 --> 00:14:33.970 WLWV Board Room: What's high leverage? What should we do? More of and less of in terms of really being strategic with our instructional practices and those things that make an impact. And you can see, here's an example of one of hatties dials that of all the studies on teacher, student relationship. 75 00:14:34.090 --> 00:14:46.260 WLWV Board Room: it has a very strong effect, size of point 7 2. So it's definitely in that zone of desired effects which we all know when teachers and students connect, and students feel a sense of 76 00:14:46.830 --> 00:14:54.839 WLWV Board Room: belonging with their teacher and and respect, and that their teacher believes in them, it impacts their learning. 77 00:14:56.480 --> 00:15:08.200 WLWV Board Room: Next, here's another example of a dial, and this one is so off the charts you can't almost see it. But this is about collective teacher efficacy which fueled a lot of our work last year around belief. 78 00:15:08.330 --> 00:15:26.399 WLWV Board Room: When teachers get together and they believe they can make a change, and they put some actions together and they work on them. That's one of the the strongest correlations to seeing growth in student learning outcomes. It's definitely within that zone of desired effects. And then just one more example. 79 00:15:26.500 --> 00:15:28.560 WLWV Board Room: Thank you, Curtis. The next one. 80 00:15:29.050 --> 00:15:52.309 WLWV Board Room: So here's another one that we know makes a difference for students is when they get effective feedback. It's actually good for adults, too, when we know how we're doing and specific. And it's connected to the learning. That helps that helps us. And so using Hades dials coming back to some of these this year is a way that we could really think about elevating the work. So 81 00:15:52.310 --> 00:16:00.270 WLWV Board Room: it was kind of interesting that our logo kind of matches, hatties, dial and gets us thinking about places that we can move the work. 82 00:16:03.620 --> 00:16:26.599 WLWV Board Room: These are a couple of text that we're going to be diving into as leaders, and you have copies of nuance, and we'll make sure you get copies of the 10 mindframes of leaders. This is also based on Hattie's work, the the 10 Mindframes one is on, on the right. The left is written by Michael Fullen, but when we think about elevating our leadership, thinking, and you can. 83 00:16:26.600 --> 00:16:39.650 WLWV Board Room: we'll talk about this at the Retreat as well at the Board Retreat. It's really about, how do effective leaders not just create a checklist of the things to do that year, but actually lead with some real thoughtful 84 00:16:39.670 --> 00:17:04.839 WLWV Board Room: thoughtfulness in mind and purpose, in in a way that sees the nuance of the work. And I think the next quote kind of helps with describe that a little bit courtesy. Nuance leaders see below the surface detect some patterns. They connect to people. They. They see themselves as as teachers. Not just leaders. But I've got 85 00:17:04.859 --> 00:17:23.310 WLWV Board Room: some communication here, and an opportunity to teach. They have an instinct for orchestration, humble in the face of challenges, determined, proud to celebrate success, and courageously, relentlessly committed to changing the system for the betterment of humanity. 86 00:17:23.369 --> 00:17:38.950 WLWV Board Room: So pushing ourselves as well as leaders of the organization around, how do we see the nuance in the work and not just the surface structure of it go deep, do a deeper dive, elevate our own practice? Continue learning as professionals. 87 00:17:38.990 --> 00:17:45.280 WLWV Board Room: and finding ways to do to do better for for humanity and for our school district. 88 00:17:48.120 --> 00:18:05.699 WLWV Board Room: Moving along. I've committed to giving you updates on our K 5 literacy renewal process. Again, this is just as a reminder folks may be watching for the first time, but also to you as a board. This is kind of that big picture timeline of those series of years of where we are in the process. 89 00:18:06.060 --> 00:18:09.749 WLWV Board Room: And you, I know you have copies of this. So, moving along. 90 00:18:10.410 --> 00:18:21.779 WLWV Board Room: If we do a deeper dive into this year, Curtis, if you can show them. There we go. These were some of the activities that you saw occurring with that renewal process, as we 91 00:18:21.800 --> 00:18:32.909 WLWV Board Room: did some pre-learning together, and then we sent some folks in the summer to some trainings. and the next slide shows kind of where we are now in the process. Here we are. 92 00:18:33.330 --> 00:18:51.590 WLWV Board Room: and there's little typo that should say August fourteenth through 17. So the fifteenth. So this is a 4 day workshop. So this is where we are now, as I mentioned, we have about 60 of our teachers at this workshop. Currently you could see a little picture there. I slid into the corner of some very 93 00:18:51.600 --> 00:18:53.170 WLWV Board Room: intent 94 00:18:53.390 --> 00:19:14.900 WLWV Board Room: listening and learning going on for all day workshops and those who cannot attend this week will have the opportunity to attend in the fall. So this is required for all teachers in the district, and with an opportunity or option for grades? 3. Through 5 teachers. 95 00:19:15.410 --> 00:19:19.940 WLWV Board Room: So what are they learning during these 4 days in the next slide? 96 00:19:21.070 --> 00:19:36.920 WLWV Board Room: So during the 4 days, the teachers are learning the teachers and learning specialists. And we also have our language specialists there. They're reviewing and practicing key instructional strategies for teaching reading. We're using the Oregon literacy framework as one of our guides 97 00:19:36.950 --> 00:19:40.770 WLWV Board Room: centering also on the pillars of reading 98 00:19:40.950 --> 00:19:54.059 WLWV Board Room: from the National Reading Council, and then as I mentioned again, the organs, organs, early literacy framework which just came out before school ended. So giving a chance for folks to kind of dive into that and unpack it. 99 00:19:54.930 --> 00:20:11.369 WLWV Board Room: And this summer those who were able to sign up. We did have representation from all of our 9 schools. So we will have teachers who will have this training, this workshop under their belt, going into the year at least from all 9 schools while we wait for the others to join. 100 00:20:11.490 --> 00:20:27.269 WLWV Board Room: So you can see some of the things they're gonna study together and practice around explicit instruction and systematic instruction. the ways that we use language and students use language. Lots of opportunities to practice bill fluency and review 101 00:20:28.380 --> 00:20:35.709 WLWV Board Room: adequate time, exposure and practice of decodable text. These are all things that we're gonna review in terms of how to teach reading 102 00:20:35.830 --> 00:20:43.229 WLWV Board Room: and as well as our reading workshop model. how to plan for all these things within that model. 103 00:20:44.950 --> 00:20:46.550 WLWV Board Room: The next slide 104 00:20:47.880 --> 00:21:03.290 WLWV Board Room: we know it's also important to talk about differences for readers, and and maybe what are stuck points for some readers. So there is specific attention. This summer in that 4 day workshop for our teachers to learn more about dyslexia. 105 00:21:03.410 --> 00:21:10.020 WLWV Board Room: The definition of it, description of it, how the brain functions differently, how to help students 106 00:21:10.090 --> 00:21:20.590 WLWV Board Room: who are identified with dyslexia and the importance of differentiating instruction for them, based on what they need. 107 00:21:20.640 --> 00:21:25.259 WLWV Board Room: making sure there's systematic instruction for them. 108 00:21:25.340 --> 00:21:42.919 WLWV Board Room: watching closely to see how, how they respond, because not all students, even not all students who are identified with dyslexia display reading challenges in the same way. So not a monolith group. We want to make sure that we're really knowing each student really well. 109 00:21:43.210 --> 00:21:46.379 WLWV Board Room: and watching their responses in progress. 110 00:21:46.530 --> 00:21:56.329 WLWV Board Room: So they did a lot of that work this afternoon, unpacking that framework. What I show on the last slide as well as dipping into. If you can go. Not yet, Curtis back. 111 00:21:56.660 --> 00:22:11.750 WLWV Board Room: and then in the afternoon I was able to go for the afternoon session today, and they got into some work with some lesson plans and some sessions to kind of practice some of those elements, and to see how the curriculum support some of that work. 112 00:22:12.120 --> 00:22:16.600 WLWV Board Room: and they'll they'll keep working for the next 3 days. Thank you. Now, Curtis. 113 00:22:18.420 --> 00:22:32.869 WLWV Board Room: and then, lastly, I shared this also with you last month, and we did have been getting some messages out to the community. It's not unusual in the summer for us to just review where we are with bus routes. 114 00:22:32.910 --> 00:22:54.199 WLWV Board Room: Students graduate families move in. People move to different homes. So we're constantly looking at what are the needs with busing and the stops and getting those routes out to folks? But over the last years. It's become more challenging. For the situations mentioned above. And it's not unique to us. This is actually happening across the State and across the nation 115 00:22:54.470 --> 00:23:10.779 WLWV Board Room: as there are shortages with bus drivers and gas prices. And then just changes for school districts. We're really having to do a little more each summer in terms of evaluate where we are and making sure that we can 116 00:23:10.830 --> 00:23:29.290 WLWV Board Room: service kids to get to school, and back home as well as we know we're a community that relies very heavily on a lot of it looks forward to a lot of co-curricular events and activities that also take bus drivers and buses and a lot of expectations to keep all those activities up and running. 117 00:23:29.390 --> 00:23:34.219 WLWV Board Room: So it does require us when we hire folks to really think about not just 118 00:23:34.290 --> 00:23:51.170 WLWV Board Room: the daily, you know, door to school, but also all the other things that require buses throughout the school year. And can we service those things in a way that's responsible and keep a bus route schedule that is consistent. We know there's been times that we've been late. 119 00:23:51.300 --> 00:23:56.369 WLWV Board Room: drop off, pick up or substitute drivers. That's 120 00:23:56.870 --> 00:24:03.680 WLWV Board Room: not uncommon. It's going to happen. But how do we try and mitigate a lot of the factors that make that 121 00:24:03.790 --> 00:24:10.609 WLWV Board Room: more frequent than less frequent, and so doing, a really deep review this summer. We're hoping to come out of it. 122 00:24:10.730 --> 00:24:20.720 WLWV Board Room: In the bottom. You can see that our review and our adjustments will get us to a more sustainable way to operate our bus service. Keep our drivers 123 00:24:20.900 --> 00:24:26.800 WLWV Board Room: cause they're so good, and when we invest a lot in training them we want them to stay 124 00:24:27.230 --> 00:24:37.920 WLWV Board Room: to make sure our bus routes are as efficient and timely as possible, and stick to those pickup drop off times that we know parents need, and that punctuality. And so 125 00:24:38.160 --> 00:24:44.019 WLWV Board Room: we're getting some of those messages out. We know it might mean a change for some folks if we consolidated a stop 126 00:24:44.090 --> 00:24:52.059 WLWV Board Room: and aren't able to get as much door to door service. But you might have to walk a little bit, and which will feel new to some folks. But 127 00:24:52.110 --> 00:24:59.889 WLWV Board Room: You know, parents could certainly reach out if they have questions, and those routes my understanding will get posted this week. So 128 00:25:01.070 --> 00:25:05.300 WLWV Board Room: that's the end of my report. Thank you, Curtis. 129 00:25:09.030 --> 00:25:16.419 WLWV Board Room: moving on to the consent. Agenda. Can I please have a motion to approve the consent. Agenda. 130 00:25:21.240 --> 00:25:34.260 WLWV Board Room: I move to approve the consent. Agenda. I second that motion seconded. Miss Douglas, please call the roll, please call the vote director, shoemaker. Yes. 131 00:25:34.390 --> 00:25:41.330 WLWV Board Room: director, sloop. I vice chair. Why. directly, though. Yes, thank you. 132 00:25:44.440 --> 00:25:59.999 WLWV Board Room: It is time for public comment, and as a reminder, our first opportunity for public comment is related to items that are on our agenda this evening. I think that the folks who have signed up to talk have been to our meetings before, and they understand 133 00:26:00.000 --> 00:26:24.289 generally kind of our the ways that we approach public comment. But just as a reminder. We are fostering a climate that encourages and values public input. And so this is a time to speak directly to the board for us to learn and collect information from you. This is not a forum for singling out district employees or other students. Or complaints. And if you do have that type of 134 00:26:24.290 --> 00:26:49.379 WLWV Board Room: complaint. There is a process that you can follow and available on our website. And again, this is a time for addressing the board and not the audience, and so we want to make sure that this is a productive and helpful time. And so we don't. We don't have. We don't do cheers or claps or negative noises, or booing because again, this is a time for us to have productive conversation with the community. 135 00:26:49.660 --> 00:27:05.750 WLWV Board Room: We do set aside 45 min for public comment. But this evening we only have 2 people signed up. So we will get started. And as a reminder, you have 3 min and there is a timer up on the screen. To help you manage your time. So first up we have Julie Fraser. 136 00:27:23.030 --> 00:27:24.920 WLWV Board Room: Hello, directors of the board. 137 00:27:25.020 --> 00:27:35.769 WLWV Board Room: I'm Julie Fraser. I live in Weslin, and I wasn't going to speak this evening, but I saw the naming of the new Adult Transition Services Center was on the agenda this evening, and I wanted to share some thoughts. 138 00:27:36.500 --> 00:27:39.050 WLWV Board Room: In the in 139 00:27:39.140 --> 00:27:43.550 WLWV Board Room: those beginning days of the 2020 shutdown a movie came out called Crip Camp. 140 00:27:43.790 --> 00:27:50.620 WLWV Board Room: We all watch a lot of movies back then. And this. This was when I became a Gd. Human fan. 141 00:27:50.820 --> 00:28:03.079 WLWV Board Room: Judy Human's first spot for Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1,973, she famously was a member of the 504 sit-in at the Federal Buildings in San Francisco, in 1,977, 142 00:28:03.520 --> 00:28:08.450 WLWV Board Room: they were all disabled without caretakers or medication, and it lasted about 26 days. 143 00:28:08.520 --> 00:28:12.889 WLWV Board Room: In April of 1,977, section 504 regulations were assigned 144 00:28:13.230 --> 00:28:19.150 WLWV Board Room: because of her and the numerous disabled people who also stood up for change. My sons have benefited 145 00:28:19.190 --> 00:28:31.289 WLWV Board Room: from the section 5, 0 4 accommodations. Adults benefit from accommodations in the workplace. and students and adults benefit from transition services to help them move to life after K. 12. Education 146 00:28:31.490 --> 00:28:35.320 WLWV Board Room: naming Wesley Wilsonville Center after her is wonderful. 147 00:28:35.550 --> 00:28:44.719 WLWV Board Room: Actually, I cannot find a correct word for the smile that it puts on my face. On Wednesday my son will travel to his university on the other side of the nation. 148 00:28:44.920 --> 00:28:55.560 WLWV Board Room: The most coveted items on his 504 were extra time and audio for long passages, books, and directions. transition services for him would have been extremely beneficial. 149 00:28:56.050 --> 00:29:00.999 WLWV Board Room: We are on on the late end of getting accommodation set up at his university. 150 00:29:01.010 --> 00:29:09.570 WLWV Board Room: and we didn't have any blueprint or guide map to follow. As I've said numerous times. It's a lonely road these have been. 151 00:29:09.760 --> 00:29:21.260 WLWV Board Room: This has been something that we've had to try to navigate ourselves, because when a 504 ends in a case through 12 public education, there wasn't any exit interview, or here are your next steps. 152 00:29:21.280 --> 00:29:24.430 WLWV Board Room: or even a what are your next steps? And how can we help 153 00:29:25.570 --> 00:29:29.700 WLWV Board Room: through figuring this out on our own? I've learned about vocational rehabilitation office. 154 00:29:30.100 --> 00:29:38.790 WLWV Board Room: Not only do they provide job and college counseling for students transitioning from an Iep, but they also serve students with 500 fours. 155 00:29:39.570 --> 00:29:56.339 WLWV Board Room: I have handed you a packet from the youth transition services that they provide, and I hope that the new human center can be inclusive of students with 5 or 4 plans, and give assistance to navigating the many documents and meetings required to gain accommodations in college and the workforce. Thank you. 156 00:29:59.160 --> 00:30:01.470 WLWV Board Room: Next up. John Mccabe. 157 00:30:34.260 --> 00:30:35.460 WLWV Board Room: Okay, 158 00:30:35.990 --> 00:30:38.690 WLWV Board Room: thank you for this time. 159 00:30:38.900 --> 00:30:45.870 WLWV Board Room: I'm passing out items. I guess I would have addressed earlier. But the audit for 160 00:30:45.940 --> 00:30:48.449 WLWV Board Room: 2122 is not available till 161 00:30:48.610 --> 00:30:52.029 WLWV Board Room: July, just late last month. 162 00:30:52.760 --> 00:30:58.740 WLWV Board Room: and if you look at the items I have circled on here. the Armen first sheet. 163 00:30:58.780 --> 00:31:02.299 WLWV Board Room: the second sheet should be the exact same number. It's not. 164 00:31:03.020 --> 00:31:04.490 WLWV Board Room: It's off by millions. 165 00:31:05.210 --> 00:31:08.390 WLWV Board Room: How the auditor didn't, didn't 166 00:31:08.400 --> 00:31:19.119 WLWV Board Room: pick it up is beyond me, but and they should be the exact same numbers. Now, if it was one time that'd be okay. But it also happened in 2021, 167 00:31:20.230 --> 00:31:23.160 WLWV Board Room: and when I approached the auditing firm about it 168 00:31:23.240 --> 00:31:25.570 WLWV Board Room: when it first showed up in 2021. 169 00:31:25.970 --> 00:31:28.309 WLWV Board Room: How I was treated by them was 170 00:31:28.340 --> 00:31:37.479 WLWV Board Room: not acceptable to me, shouldn't have been acceptable to anybody. and they should have gone back and actually checked. Why, the numbers are up by so many millions of dollars. 171 00:31:38.650 --> 00:31:41.369 WLWV Board Room: Now, why, I'm bringing this up now 172 00:31:41.620 --> 00:31:51.009 WLWV Board Room: as part of what's you are going over today is the financial report unit. It says several positions were not filled last year. 173 00:31:51.580 --> 00:31:54.290 WLWV Board Room: It's like we didn't have a need. We had a need. 174 00:31:54.840 --> 00:31:58.200 WLWV Board Room: Our scores from prior years showed we had a need. 175 00:31:59.240 --> 00:32:11.360 WLWV Board Room: And it really questions. where are we going for this next year? I only took the audit. but the audit from 2022 to the budget for this current year 176 00:32:11.520 --> 00:32:17.589 WLWV Board Room: there's an increase, allegedly an increase of 120 staff under the general fund. But budget. 177 00:32:19.400 --> 00:32:27.239 WLWV Board Room: if the how can the public know if there's really gonna be a hundred, 20 people. a hundred 20 staff increase 178 00:32:27.850 --> 00:32:34.770 WLWV Board Room: and be. Since we don't know if there's gonna be 120 staff increase, or if there is going to be 120 step increase 179 00:32:35.240 --> 00:32:45.559 WLWV Board Room: that year, that number is unsustainable. Some of those people will have to be released in 2425. So you would think you would only wanna hire enough people to last. 180 00:32:45.890 --> 00:32:48.989 WLWV Board Room: you know, not hire one year gone the next year. 181 00:32:49.620 --> 00:32:56.329 WLWV Board Room: but we don't know. and we're not going to know. and that's really not what people want to hear. 182 00:32:56.980 --> 00:33:03.270 WLWV Board Room: then the next one is on the proposed local option. Is that money needed? Of course it is. 183 00:33:03.960 --> 00:33:16.199 WLWV Board Room: However, there is enough people mad at the school district for such items, such as Oppenlander placement of the school in the Blammett Neighbourhood Association, which still. 184 00:33:16.370 --> 00:33:18.260 WLWV Board Room: as of today, is not complete. 185 00:33:18.350 --> 00:33:23.100 WLWV Board Room: It does not meet the standards that were required by the city of Wesley. 186 00:33:23.770 --> 00:33:26.640 WLWV Board Room: And so there's a lot of no votes that will show up. 187 00:33:27.340 --> 00:33:37.740 WLWV Board Room: This ballot measure does not need to occur till 2024, which is in the data here here. and I think that's what it should occurs. Wait till 2024. Thank you. 188 00:33:39.830 --> 00:33:50.969 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. And that concludes public comment. This evening we have 4 items for board business. First up is an update from the business office. And I'll turn it over to Dr. Hughes. 189 00:33:52.190 --> 00:34:10.790 WLWV Board Room: Good evening, everyone. It's so nice to see you today. So. And I have a financial report, please. So in front of us here. With the next slide you will see the financial report for the general fund as of July 30 first. 190 00:34:10.940 --> 00:34:17.190 and the information that I have right now under year-end projection. 191 00:34:17.210 --> 00:34:33.180 WLWV Board Room: Compared to the adopted purchase. Only 2 item, that differences. The first one is the estimate, and then fund balance under the adopted budget was a 30.1 million 192 00:34:33.590 --> 00:34:38.240 WLWV Board Room: versus the Gn. Projected 32.3. I thought it 193 00:34:38.420 --> 00:35:01.209 WLWV Board Room: 2.4 million, and that is when the business office put together the budget back in February. This is the information that we have the best information we have at that time, and the budget got approved by the Budget Committee in May and adopted by early June. 194 00:35:01.230 --> 00:35:13.550 WLWV Board Room: and then by the when we get close to this school year end. The business office be able to close a vacancy deposition and 195 00:35:13.700 --> 00:35:18.269 WLWV Board Room: up the vacancy. Also we receive higher in the Commons 196 00:35:18.350 --> 00:35:35.479 WLWV Board Room: Common school fund with the we bought that 970,000, and a common school fund came in a little bit higher, with the 235,000 more that give us about 2.2 million higher 197 00:35:35.480 --> 00:35:53.709 WLWV Board Room: than the adopted. So again, the 32.4 million, that is, to the estimate end fund for the 2223 go into the 2324. This number might change up from the audit, complete the audit 198 00:35:54.390 --> 00:35:55.900 WLWV Board Room: for the 23, 199 00:35:56.220 --> 00:36:18.160 WLWV Board Room: and the second different that I have for the Gn projected versus the adopted project fund. So when we viewed a budget, we based on 9.9 billion, that is a state level. But then, in late June, with the June 24, the State came in at 10.2 billion. 200 00:36:18.160 --> 00:36:28.549 WLWV Board Room: So with the 10.2 billion. Was it 9.9? It gave us the additional of 3 million more. So with that. 201 00:36:28.620 --> 00:36:31.479 WLWV Board Room: add up right now. June thirtieth. 202 00:36:31.560 --> 00:36:45.380 WLWV Board Room: for July 30. First, they end in phone by an estimate that I have for 2324 will be 17.6 million or 13.6 3 of the total revenue. 203 00:36:48.430 --> 00:36:49.830 WLWV Board Room: Any question. 204 00:36:51.580 --> 00:36:54.640 WLWV Board Room: questions or comments for Doctor Hughes on the financial update. 205 00:36:56.640 --> 00:37:34.170 WLWV Board Room: And I'll just point out yet again that whenever you give reports, it's a reminder that your job is like hurting cats and gentlemen chainsaws, because there are so many moving parts that you have to account for, and the timing of our fiscal year, the timing of when we get information from the State about funding that's available. So just wanna thank you for making this really clear for us and understanding where that difference comes from. It's obviously nice to be in a situation where we've received more money supporting public education. But just wanna thank you for making that clear and sharing this with us this evening. Thanks. 206 00:37:34.570 --> 00:37:46.409 WLWV Board Room: And director. Why don't thank you for pointing that out. I think some folks may be watching at home or in the audience may forget that, unlike, maybe a personal budget or your own 207 00:37:46.470 --> 00:37:57.389 WLWV Board Room: business that you operate, school budgets are not isolated. They're actually connected to every other school district's budget. So when the State sees increases. 208 00:37:57.740 --> 00:37:59.499 WLWV Board Room: they can allocate 209 00:37:59.600 --> 00:38:09.119 WLWV Board Room: across all districts which creates a fluctuation. When a State sees something, you know, when funding decreases for them, or they or they don't receive. 210 00:38:09.130 --> 00:38:24.659 WLWV Board Room: then everybody's gets adjusted. So there is this interdependence that occurs between school districts and their budgets, which is why it's not unusual for the Oregon Department of Education to continue to what we call true up 211 00:38:24.900 --> 00:38:33.270 WLWV Board Room: or send updates to school districts, and one of them was just mentioned this evening when they decided to allocate more funding. 212 00:38:33.600 --> 00:38:34.890 WLWV Board Room: Everybody's 213 00:38:34.930 --> 00:38:54.160 WLWV Board Room: charts are gonna look different, because when they approve their budget based on one number. Now, it's a little bit different. And I would also like to address that as much as possible. We fill positions when we post them. And we do hire people. There are factors outside of our control that impact that when someone 214 00:38:54.180 --> 00:39:12.379 WLWV Board Room: leaves or gets reassigned during the year, or we've had some postings that we tried to fill, whether they were in nutrition services or operations, or school support staff that as much as we tried we we just couldn't fill. There's a workforce shortage. 215 00:39:12.760 --> 00:39:21.130 WLWV Board Room: So I just want to assure you, as the Board that every position that we posted we worked incredibly hard to fill, because we know. 216 00:39:21.300 --> 00:39:39.209 WLWV Board Room: no matter where someone is working, they're connected to outcomes for students and those positions are open for a reason. They're posted for a reason, and we do our best to fill them, and some got filled Midi mid mid year, which meant we held on to money, and then we're able to disperse it accordingly. But it also meant we 217 00:39:39.430 --> 00:39:46.410 WLWV Board Room: didn't spend as much. And so some of those are part of the truing up that dr. Hughes mentioned in terms of 218 00:39:46.530 --> 00:39:48.460 WLWV Board Room: unfilled positions. 219 00:39:49.430 --> 00:40:12.979 WLWV Board Room: and in the addition to the state this number might change throughout the year, based on the Admw. That audit hell versus the State District health based on 197 school district in Oregon, and also ode focus on like last year 220 00:40:13.020 --> 00:40:24.789 WLWV Board Room: Admw versus this year, which of a year higher than they will do that number for our space phone fund. So this number will continue, I will continue to update you on this number 221 00:40:26.750 --> 00:40:36.590 WLWV Board Room: under Adm W is the average daily membership. So it's about student enrollment and attendance, so as that changes throughout the year, our funding changes as well so 222 00:40:38.680 --> 00:40:47.589 WLWV Board Room: great. Our next item, is from the department of teaching and learning, and Dr. Joyson, will talk to us about the England English Language Development Annual Report. 223 00:40:50.990 --> 00:40:58.970 WLWV Board Room: Good evening. This is a report that we give annually, and that's so. As 224 00:40:59.270 --> 00:41:09.789 WLWV Board Room: school district directors. You are aware of the report that's put out by the State, and this report is always for the previous 225 00:41:10.420 --> 00:41:21.920 WLWV Board Room: school year. So this is 2,021, 22, and then it gets processed and comes out at the end of the next school year, so it always feels a little bit 226 00:41:22.180 --> 00:41:25.240 WLWV Board Room: as though Whoa! That was almost 2 years ago 227 00:41:26.250 --> 00:41:27.160 WLWV Board Room: next slide. 228 00:41:28.560 --> 00:41:40.099 WLWV Board Room: So again, this is A a mandate in the State of Oregon, and it's just to make sure that we share from a state perspective. 229 00:41:40.760 --> 00:42:04.549 WLWV Board Room: a description of current state of emerging bilinguals. We choose to also just do a little bit of contrast with how we're doing in our own school district and specifically progress with assessments, attendance, graduation, and just looking at that, we are funding our English learner programs. We have just completed an audit this spring. 230 00:42:04.640 --> 00:42:25.579 WLWV Board Room: It was done over the last 2 years. And it's a complete title, 3 audit that asks for very detailed information about progress, about spending. And this is something that happens. Oh, every 5, 6 years in the State of Oregon, along with this annual report 231 00:42:26.090 --> 00:42:27.050 WLWV Board Room: next slide. 232 00:42:28.490 --> 00:42:49.420 WLWV Board Room: So a couple of the things just the contrast it still has stayed the same about, you know, most of the emerging bilingual students are in grades. K, through 5. What's interesting about looking at the progress of English learners is they don't stay English learners. So when students are identified, the goal is in. 233 00:42:49.420 --> 00:42:59.470 WLWV Board Room: you know, 7 years or so to make sure that they are exiting. So you have to be careful when you look at data from year to year, and that two-thirds is the same in our district. 234 00:43:00.690 --> 00:43:22.070 WLWV Board Room: The for your graduation rate. That's one of the metrics used, and in Oregon it was a 65.3% average, and it was 100 in our district. One of the things to consider. In looking at, that is, by the time students are in high school, we have a relatively small number of students who are still classified as English learners 235 00:43:23.030 --> 00:43:25.899 again. They publish 236 00:43:26.260 --> 00:43:27.639 WLWV Board Room: the 237 00:43:27.950 --> 00:43:45.439 WLWV Board Room: names of the districts that have 50 or more students who have earned the biliteracy seal, and there were 9 in Oregon. For this report Wesley Wilsonville was one of them, and in 2,02122, we had 68 students who are in the seal by literacy 238 00:43:45.710 --> 00:43:46.590 WLWV Board Room: next slide. 239 00:43:49.010 --> 00:44:04.439 WLWV Board Room: So this year is the first year that the Oregon State assessments were back in play, and a couple of things to note about. That is, the participation rate was lower, and also students. 240 00:44:04.440 --> 00:44:19.939 WLWV Board Room: unless they were third graders, and would not have taken the assessment. Previously, students in the State of Oregon had had 2 years within. We're not participating, you know, in this assessment. So the report acknowledges that you have to really look at at 241 00:44:20.090 --> 00:44:23.140 WLWV Board Room: 2,02122 carefully. 242 00:44:23.440 --> 00:44:30.850 WLWV Board Room: And, as you can see, that's why the percentage of English learners across the State who 243 00:44:30.950 --> 00:44:53.810 WLWV Board Room: met levels in English language arts was 6%. That's very low, you know, for the State. And it was 24 in Westland Wilsonville mathematics, 4% and 16% in our district. Again, it's not an excuse with the pandemic is just a consideration that the combination of 244 00:44:53.830 --> 00:45:14.739 WLWV Board Room: participation rates the first year. The fact that there had been a gap in students working with this kind of skills on this assessment. And then the you know the the numbers within that the subset of English learners, or something to consider. So what we wanna do is just look at that. That's going to change 245 00:45:16.300 --> 00:45:18.050 WLWV Board Room: 30, 246 00:45:18.290 --> 00:45:33.200 WLWV Board Room: 6% of English language learners. And this is by looking at the Alpa every year are on track to attain English language proficiency. And it's 48% in our school district. At the time of this report. 247 00:45:33.310 --> 00:45:51.120 WLWV Board Room: 10% of students in the State of Oregon are in the eld program. It was 4% in Wessend Wilsonville. Our numbers have grown. And right now, we're at about 5.5% of our student population. So if there are any questions, I'll take them. 248 00:45:51.280 --> 00:45:52.609 WLWV Board Room: otherwise. Thank you. 249 00:45:53.750 --> 00:45:59.489 WLWV Board Room: Any questions, can I make a comment, of course. Great. I just wanted to. 250 00:45:59.610 --> 00:46:03.349 WLWV Board Room: Thank our school district so much for 251 00:46:03.980 --> 00:46:20.399 WLWV Board Room: how much importance we put on multilingualism in our district. So thank you so much for that. And how we're really focusing on growing our own teachers to help our students who are English language learners. 252 00:46:21.480 --> 00:46:25.210 WLWV Board Room: that's all I wanted to say. So thank you for your great work. 253 00:46:29.770 --> 00:46:52.210 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. Further comments or questions. Thank you. Next up. We have. A very exciting agenda item, and so I'll turn it over to Dr. Ludwig, and this item does require board action. So after the staff report. We will discuss and then we will be seeking a motion to move this item forward, so I'll turn it over to you. 254 00:46:53.690 --> 00:46:55.070 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 255 00:46:55.450 --> 00:47:03.379 WLWV Board Room: I think you all received a copy of the book. You can get one for you, Julie. 256 00:47:03.560 --> 00:47:08.340 WLWV Board Room: so it's it's really with great excitement and 257 00:47:08.470 --> 00:47:13.629 WLWV Board Room: and humility that we put forward. The naming of this facility. 258 00:47:13.730 --> 00:47:27.819 WLWV Board Room: when we open a new school course, use the board. Give a name that's part of in our policy. The Board authorizes that and then there's times when we have these other venues like our crest center, and other places that 259 00:47:28.000 --> 00:47:40.319 WLWV Board Room: we need to name, and sometimes we call it the name of the services that we provide. And sometimes we have the opportunity to maybe think at another level about what we could aspire to. 260 00:47:40.530 --> 00:47:43.739 WLWV Board Room: and so in doing a lot of 261 00:47:43.810 --> 00:47:52.560 WLWV Board Room: research and having folks visit our school district with our inclusive practices watching a lot of documentaries that have 262 00:47:52.640 --> 00:48:07.169 WLWV Board Room: highlighted the work of the disability movement and civil activism. Judy, human's name has come forward multiple times as someone who really changed the landscape in terms of disability rights. 263 00:48:07.210 --> 00:48:09.040 WLWV Board Room: Not only 264 00:48:09.440 --> 00:48:24.150 WLWV Board Room: Was she an accomplished educator and teacher getting her license in New York City as a first person in a wheelchair to do that but then, in her work and advocacy is really what set her apart in terms of 265 00:48:24.170 --> 00:48:28.700 WLWV Board Room: an exemplar of an educator who's working to elevate 266 00:48:28.870 --> 00:48:39.559 WLWV Board Room: the experience of all children. And she served in the Clinton Administration, the Obama administration, and then globally was asked to serve across 267 00:48:39.710 --> 00:48:49.820 WLWV Board Room: several of the projects identified by the United Nations and others around championing rights for those with disabilities. Across the globe. 268 00:48:49.990 --> 00:48:54.199 WLWV Board Room: So she's internationally known, as well as 269 00:48:54.880 --> 00:49:01.919 WLWV Board Room: A very significant figure in the life of our nation and around civil rights for those with disabilities. 270 00:49:02.760 --> 00:49:10.730 WLWV Board Room: Unfortunately and sadly she passed away this year, otherwise we'd be seeing if she could be here in person. 271 00:49:10.890 --> 00:49:22.850 WLWV Board Room: So in terms of a legacy and a tribute to her and keeping her work on the forefront. But, more importantly, what her work symbolized, which was independence for all children 272 00:49:22.930 --> 00:49:28.690 WLWV Board Room: and equal opportunity is really what our adult transition services is about 273 00:49:28.710 --> 00:49:33.330 WLWV Board Room: for children at youth, 18 to 21, who are transitioning 274 00:49:33.720 --> 00:49:41.789 WLWV Board Room: from a K. 12 experience to whatever is next for them in terms of college career and life and independence. 275 00:49:41.890 --> 00:49:47.920 WLWV Board Room: and so, being able to call this facility, the human centre 276 00:49:47.930 --> 00:49:59.519 WLWV Board Room: allows us to live into not only her legacy and her vision, but also the work that our staff are already doing, which aligns perfectly to what she would want for all children. 277 00:49:59.950 --> 00:50:13.740 WLWV Board Room: I wanna just mention that Lauren Brigsby, who is our director of student services, has been doing remarkable work with our team, who works with the adult Transition Center, Sherry, Canfield, and Summer Buzz and their staff 278 00:50:13.910 --> 00:50:28.439 WLWV Board Room: and then creating a partnership with Clackamas Community College, and President Tim Cook, where all of our students see themselves as lifelong learners and taking classes at Ccc along with 279 00:50:28.590 --> 00:50:42.230 WLWV Board Room: accessing the services at the adult transition service program. So you have the memo in front of you. You have a little background on Judy. Human, you you have in front of you that 280 00:50:42.320 --> 00:50:56.370 WLWV Board Room: the Board has named other facilities, not just for geographical locations, like. you know, Rosemont Ridge or streets, but also for for people. There are times when we make that exception, and you have those examples in front of you. 281 00:50:56.430 --> 00:51:09.459 WLWV Board Room: And so our staff would like to submit to the board a request that we name this facility, which we will do the ribbon cutting ceremony? As soon as we can the human center. 282 00:51:10.140 --> 00:51:13.970 WLWV Board Room: So I'll entertain any questions, and you have a sample motion in front of you. 283 00:51:15.560 --> 00:51:22.679 WLWV Board Room: Any clarifying questions, and if not, then I will welcome a motion to get the discussion started. 284 00:51:26.920 --> 00:51:28.140 WLWV Board Room: Make a motion 285 00:51:31.670 --> 00:51:37.279 WLWV Board Room: I move that we name, the new facility for the adult transition services. The human center 286 00:51:40.310 --> 00:51:45.400 WLWV Board Room: is there a second? I'll second great. So it's been moved and seconded. 287 00:51:45.650 --> 00:51:54.389 WLWV Board Room: I'd like to open it up for questions, comments, and any feedback. About this item. 288 00:51:55.860 --> 00:52:07.819 WLWV Board Room: Make a quick couple of comments. II would say generally I am not in favor of naming buildings after people as as a practice. I don't think that's a great practice. Not only can that be fraught. 289 00:52:09.240 --> 00:52:20.179 WLWV Board Room: I also appreciate when the the name of the building describes what the building does for the community's sake. That, said III will vote for this for this one. 290 00:52:20.220 --> 00:52:40.689 WLWV Board Room: I think this is a a worthy choice, but also, II hope, in our thinking about how we can live this the way we intend to that we that we are able to keep that connection because so often a student 291 00:52:40.790 --> 00:52:53.520 WLWV Board Room: goes to a school. I went to a middle school named after a person have no idea who that person was never did, and I wouldn't II don't want that for our students. I'd like I'd like all of our students to know that. So that said, I will absolutely vote yes for this 292 00:52:53.740 --> 00:53:13.360 WLWV Board Room: alright seeing no other discussion, i'll, just make a quick comment, that for anyone watching the agenda packet. The memo is very well done, and explaining why. 293 00:53:13.360 --> 00:53:40.010 WLWV Board Room: This is such a worthy and worthwhile naming opportunity. So I encourage you to read the agenda packet. And I just wanna read this one section and it says the values and goals of Wesley Wilsonville School district align with those of Miss Human, that is, for all of our students to be treated fairly and without discrimination, for full inclusion in our schools and classrooms, and that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. 294 00:53:40.010 --> 00:53:48.579 WLWV Board Room: So I think that that's just a perfect summation of why, I will also be supporting this motion. And so I think at this point, if you wouldn't mind calling to vote 295 00:53:50.710 --> 00:53:52.179 WLWV Board Room: director, shoemaker. 296 00:53:53.010 --> 00:53:55.000 WLWV Board Room: director, sloop. 297 00:53:55.130 --> 00:53:57.150 WLWV Board Room: Hi Sher Wyatt. Bye. 298 00:53:57.300 --> 00:54:00.150 WLWV Board Room: directive, Vidal. Thank you. 299 00:54:00.830 --> 00:54:02.830 WLWV Board Room: Thank you so much. 300 00:54:04.140 --> 00:54:14.539 WLWV Board Room: We're really excited. This allows us to move forward with some of our plans. That will. Now we can. Make some of those final accommodations. I also want to just assure you that 301 00:54:14.680 --> 00:54:26.500 WLWV Board Room: this was just a serious of consideration for them as it was for you tonight, and I appreciate the sentiments around. What it means to name a facility. 302 00:54:26.610 --> 00:54:29.110 WLWV Board Room: and for them to give a family name. 303 00:54:29.190 --> 00:54:39.999 WLWV Board Room: They had to trust us that we were gonna uphold to those values, that this wasn't gonna be a whim or a trend, but that this was going to be long and enduring commitment. 304 00:54:40.260 --> 00:55:05.980 WLWV Board Room: and when they did their research on who we were, and we had to go through a vetting process with several of the staff and the committee, and running it by the family. There was a long, deep consideration of our district's wordiness to this family name, and when they called with the news, part of it was just we now know about you. We now know your work. We vetted you, and we we believe 305 00:55:06.190 --> 00:55:16.869 WLWV Board Room: in what you're setting out to do, and that this isn't just compliance kind of check the box. But this is something of deep value to your district and your community. 306 00:55:17.400 --> 00:55:24.509 WLWV Board Room: And so they were really honored to give their name to this. So I think now it's incumbent on us to live into that. 307 00:55:24.640 --> 00:55:31.629 WLWV Board Room: and to do right, not only for our students, but also for the legacy of this family, so that we can 308 00:55:31.880 --> 00:55:39.899 WLWV Board Room: carry on Judy's work and interest, but also do what's right for our students and our families. So thank you so much. Appreciate it. 309 00:55:41.380 --> 00:55:51.329 WLWV Board Room: And our last business item of the evening is from the Communications Department, and we'll welcome Andrew Kilstrom to give a staff report 310 00:55:52.570 --> 00:56:02.390 WLWV Board Room: good evening board. So before you, you have a second reading of our local option levy 311 00:56:02.700 --> 00:56:16.249 WLWV Board Room: As we discussed in our July meeting. The levy is a true renewal, so it would renew the existing tax rate not to exceed a dollar 50 per $1,000 of assessed property value and 312 00:56:16.310 --> 00:56:22.809 WLWV Board Room: in practice, that's actually closer to a dollar 35 in in past years, and even lower that than that in the past couple. 313 00:56:23.210 --> 00:56:33.159 WLWV Board Room: The local option levy. We're very fortunate western Wallsville to have had it in place since 2,000. And it does currently fund approximately 90 teachers across. 314 00:56:33.390 --> 00:56:40.729 WLWV Board Room: All now, 16 of our schools. So that is about 45 teachers across the primary level. 315 00:56:40.840 --> 00:56:46.059 WLWV Board Room: 20 teachers, and support staff across the middle level and 25 316 00:56:46.110 --> 00:56:49.470 WLWV Board Room: teachers at the high school level. 317 00:56:51.520 --> 00:57:00.440 WLWV Board Room: We are recommending and requesting board action tonight. We do have an August eighteenth deadline if the Board would like to proceed. 318 00:57:01.350 --> 00:57:19.689 WLWV Board Room: We did query, surrounding districts. And there was a question last meeting about how does this rate compare to other districts in the area? And it does fall between a dollar and and $2 per 1,000 assessed value. Some examples nearby Beaverton. Is that a dollar? 25 319 00:57:20.340 --> 00:57:27.490 WLWV Board Room: Sherwood and Eugene. School districts are both at a dollar 50 the same right rate that we are requesting here. 320 00:57:27.510 --> 00:57:34.930 WLWV Board Room: Like us, we go. School district is at a dollar 64, and Portland public is a dollar 99 I think the highest in the State. 321 00:57:36.780 --> 00:57:45.730 WLWV Board Room: So, bypassing a resolution tonight, the School Board would be authorizing the school district to file the ballot measure with the Clackams County Elections office 322 00:57:45.840 --> 00:58:05.040 WLWV Board Room: at which point there'd be a 7 day petition period. Following that we would file one follow up form, and at which time we'd receive our election measure number and then we would spend September and October. Educating the public on this measure, and why the district has proposed it, and 323 00:58:05.240 --> 00:58:08.670 WLWV Board Room: obviously concluding with the November seventh election. So 324 00:58:08.770 --> 00:58:13.360 WLWV Board Room: if there's any questions tonight, we're happy to answer them. Thank you. 325 00:58:15.480 --> 00:58:31.969 WLWV Board Room: Great. And II believe, for for this type of resolution there is some specific wording in terms of making the motion. Is that correct? And so, if you all wouldn't mind referencing the agenda packet, and I will open this up for a motion. 326 00:58:36.420 --> 00:58:56.270 WLWV Board Room: I move the Board approve. Resolution 2023. Dash 2. Calling a measure, election to submit to the electors of the district. The question of authorizing the renewal of a 5 year local option tax at the rate of a dollar 50 per $1,000 of assessed evaluation to finance district operations. 327 00:58:57.490 --> 00:58:59.100 WLWV Board Room: I second the motion 328 00:59:01.060 --> 00:59:06.830 WLWV Board Room: alright moved and seconded. I'll open it up for questions, discussions, and comments. 329 00:59:09.940 --> 00:59:18.139 WLWV Board Room: I'll kick things off by saying that I will be supporting this resolution. A huge reason that our district 330 00:59:18.500 --> 00:59:40.659 WLWV Board Room: has achieved the excellence that it has is because of our staff and our class sizes, and our student teacher ratios. And to me no new taxes and keeping 90 teachers. Is the definition of a no brainer. And so when we think about losing 45 primary school, primary level 331 00:59:40.660 --> 01:00:03.179 WLWV Board Room: 20 middle and 25 high school teachers, that would be devastating for our district. And I think, as we've seen over the years with the financial reporting, the fact that all of these funds are audited and accounted for. I believe we've earned the trust of our community to support this, and so I will gladly support this resolution. And then 332 01:00:03.180 --> 01:00:16.209 WLWV Board Room: enthusiastically help campaign and the communities to get approval. Because I think it's what we've come to expect from our school district, and so we'll be supporting this motion this evening. 333 01:00:18.430 --> 01:00:28.780 WLWV Board Room: I just like to comment that I echo vice chair Wyatt's sentiments and that these 90 positions are critical to our district. 334 01:00:28.880 --> 01:00:43.650 And I just wanna thank our generous community for supporting our school district. We love educating your children. We love your families and 335 01:00:43.980 --> 01:01:09.210 WLWV Board Room: I wanna thank the team here at the school district office for all their work. On preparing this for us and providing us with the background information we need to support this as well this evening. I believe that our rate is in accordance with the rest of the rates in in our metropolitan area, and that 336 01:01:09.270 --> 01:01:16.060 WLWV Board Room: our community supports this reasonable rate. So I appreciate our community for that. Thank you. 337 01:01:17.880 --> 01:01:24.980 WLWV Board Room: I will be in support of this levy. Because there will be a continuation of what we currently have. 338 01:01:25.170 --> 01:01:36.090 WLWV Board Room: and by voting on it in November if it does not pass, it would allow the district time to make adjustments. Accordingly, whether it's budget 339 01:01:36.100 --> 01:01:45.850 WLWV Board Room: or working with a union to eliminate some of those positions rather than waiting until closer to when it expires in 340 01:01:46.250 --> 01:01:48.149 WLWV Board Room: June of 25. 341 01:01:52.620 --> 01:02:13.509 WLWV Board Room: Thank you, Director Sloop, for for pointing that out, because for me, the question isn't, do I favor a local option, levy? The question is the timing of this right, is it? Do we? Do we need to do this now? Should we do this now? Does that make sense? Do you want to add any more of of your I know you mentioned at the last Board meeting, and you and we've got some things in front here. Would you wanna mention a little bit about that timing. 342 01:02:13.630 --> 01:02:21.449 WLWV Board Room: Yeah, we are on the earlier end. And intentionally doing so, knowing that there is some some planning we could do in the event that 343 01:02:21.490 --> 01:02:34.200 WLWV Board Room: a measure did not pass. It would also provide additional opportunities to propose a similar same same same measure in in future elections leading up to June thirtieth, 2,025. 344 01:02:34.410 --> 01:02:44.910 WLWV Board Room: So there's kind of 2 prongs to that. This isn't the only time the district has gone out this early. They did. We did do that in 2,014, I believe so. It's not 345 01:02:45.220 --> 01:02:57.380 WLWV Board Room: entirely uncommon to go out 2 years early. But given the November election with Presidential primaries, knowing that there will be a big voter turnout. We think it makes sense 346 01:02:57.650 --> 01:03:00.539 WLWV Board Room: given where we're at, and and allowing that lead time. 347 01:03:04.750 --> 01:03:09.099 WLWV Board Room: seeing no additional comments or questions. Please call the role 348 01:03:10.270 --> 01:03:18.839 WLWV Board Room: director, shoemaker, director, sloop, I vice chair. Wyatt, I direct to Vidal. Yes, thank you. 349 01:03:22.210 --> 01:03:47.489 WLWV Board Room: That concludes our board business item of the agenda. Next up we do have another public comment period. This is for items that are not on the agenda this evening, but we welcome the chance to hear from the families here in our school district, and so these are people who live in the district, and we currently have 3 people signed up. And first up is Leslie Jensen. 350 01:03:59.910 --> 01:04:06.870 WLWV Board Room: Good evening. My name is Leslie Jensen, and I'm a resident of Wilsonville, and I want to thank you for the opportunity to speak tonight. 351 01:04:06.990 --> 01:04:23.149 WLWV Board Room: A few months ago I spoke about House Bill 31, 98. The bill concentrated on how to help turn around the early literacy crisis facing Oregon. This past June House Bill 31, 98, passed all Government hurdles and was signed into law, which is great news. 352 01:04:23.370 --> 01:04:33.489 Further, great news is that the information on how to access. This funding is now prominently featured on the Oregon Department of Education website, titled Early Literacy Success. 353 01:04:33.690 --> 01:04:48.430 These grants can be planned. Starting now with a due date of early December, and funding can date back to expenditures. Starting this October. I am here tonight to encourage all of you to understand the opportunity that we now have. With this grant. 354 01:04:48.520 --> 01:05:00.400 WLWV Board Room: The Els Grant is giving districts the support to have early grade teachers lease at first further training and research, aligned strategies, and the critical foundational skills 355 01:05:00.610 --> 01:05:21.029 WLWV Board Room: in literacy. These strategies, strategies and practices will create learning environments that provide all students the best chance to succeed in learning how to read and write. There are many exceptional training opportunities listed on the ode website that would be hugely impactful to our teachers and administrators. And the why and how around these topics 356 01:05:21.610 --> 01:05:33.700 WLWV Board Room: I'd like to share with a quote from the Orton Gillingham Institute of Multi-sensory Education Manual that a cadre of Wesley Wilsonville teachers and administrators received when they attended the week long learning session. This past June 357 01:05:34.010 --> 01:05:42.549 WLWV Board Room: teachers are the direct links between literacy and children. The responsibility is one of the greatest in any profession teacher, knowledge is invaluable. 358 01:05:42.630 --> 01:05:57.080 WLWV Board Room: Another area focus for the initiative is support for start struggling readers. As we know by the data around reading, acquisition for intervention, for an intervention to be the most effective in helping struggling readers. It should happen as early as possible 359 01:05:57.230 --> 01:06:19.520 WLWV Board Room: if a child in the early grades, even late kindergarten, or first grade, regardless of his or her background, is not responding to quality, direct instruction in learning the phonetic rules and word attack strategies, then appropriate intensive support needs to be given so that the child does not fall behind creating further academic and emotional issues. 360 01:06:19.900 --> 01:06:23.549 WLWV Board Room: The literacy, success initiative. Grant would help with this goal 361 01:06:23.690 --> 01:06:36.930 WLWV Board Room: by providing our district with the opportunities to look at high dosage, tutoring, intensive summer school programs and the possibility to employ learning specialists and or interventionists. Preliminary allocations for the grant 362 01:06:37.110 --> 01:06:44.040 WLWV Board Room: are set for Westland Wilsonville for the next 2 years, to be just under $600,000. 363 01:06:44.740 --> 01:07:03.809 WLWV Board Room: If the upcoming Ela adoption in March provides the high quality curriculum for our hardworking teachers that they and all our students deserve, in conjunction with teacher training and extra support opportunities for the funding from the early literacy success. We could see real change in our literacy data in the years to come. Thank you. 364 01:07:06.440 --> 01:07:08.810 WLWV Board Room: Next up we have Andrew Clerk. 365 01:07:19.040 --> 01:07:43.929 WLWV Board Room: Hi, I'm Andrew Clark. I'm a resident of Wes Lenn and so I'm here today to talk about our families. Experience with inclusion in the school district. So last week I was excited to see an email from the school district, noting that they were hosting a free showing of the movie. Forget me, not right. This is a movie about a family struggle getting their kid accepted, getting their kid included in the classroom and bringing them forward. 366 01:07:44.070 --> 01:07:52.689 WLWV Board Room: So reading the synopsis of this movie really made me forced me to kind of revisit my experience. My family's experience over the last year with inclusion. 367 01:07:53.880 --> 01:07:54.910 WLWV Board Room: And so 368 01:07:57.470 --> 01:08:08.660 WLWV Board Room: when you when you start talking about inclusion in school room, in the school environment, it's not about just putting kids in classroom, it's about making sure those kids are seeing, and that those kids are successful in the future and feel 369 01:08:08.710 --> 01:08:10.579 WLWV Board Room: welcomed in their environment. 370 01:08:11.270 --> 01:08:24.360 WLWV Board Room: The reality that we found is that classroom teachers are being asked to support what is essentially several classrooms worth of issues. They're overwhelmed, overworked, and then they don't have time for everybody and everything that they need to do. 371 01:08:24.800 --> 01:08:29.980 WLWV Board Room: I have a tremendous amount of respect for the teaching profession. It's not easy. 372 01:08:30.080 --> 01:08:36.770 WLWV Board Room: but this isn't sustainable for them. We see them at the end of the school year they are burnt out. 373 01:08:37.410 --> 01:08:43.710 WLWV Board Room: We've also found that the district's knowledge and support regarding dyslexia to be severely lacking 374 01:08:44.090 --> 01:08:48.079 and we've had to seek outside intervention to ensure our children's future success. 375 01:08:48.260 --> 01:09:00.709 WLWV Board Room: This has come at a large personal and financial expense that we are fortunately able to provide for our children. In the Westland area we have. We're lucky enough to have experts to help our children that are not being served by our schools. 376 01:09:01.210 --> 01:09:11.859 WLWV Board Room: Has the school district ever thought about approaching some of these experts and and asked them why their businesses are growing. They have wait lists of families and kids trying to get help. 377 01:09:12.390 --> 01:09:15.720 WLWV Board Room: And it's our kids right? That's not 378 01:09:17.040 --> 01:09:18.420 WLWV Board Room: not a good sign. 379 01:09:19.990 --> 01:09:27.030 WLWV Board Room: You know. Cause if these children were receiving the free and accessible public education that they are legally obligated to 380 01:09:27.609 --> 01:09:45.180 WLWV Board Room: those they would be out of business. We we would. There'd be a minimal amount of kids lining up to get these services. We personally seen the power of these services, our daughter's growth grown exponentially over the last year. One year of doing it, and she's close to reading a grade level again. 381 01:09:46.100 --> 01:09:53.839 WLWV Board Room: What we found this same program that she's using in private practice is in a closet at our school with no one trained to deliver it. 382 01:09:54.170 --> 01:09:59.069 WLWV Board Room: Is that acceptable? Is that? Is that how we want to run our schools? 383 01:09:59.490 --> 01:10:14.280 WLWV Board Room: You know, in the June School Board Meeting meeting. Dr. Ludwig mentioned that Wessel Wilsonville is one of the few districts practicing a full inclusion model, and commented about the notion of belief and belonging? And how do we ensure that our students, staff, and families, feel that sense of welcoming? 384 01:10:15.400 --> 01:10:22.750 WLWV Board Room: How do we make that happen when a child doesn't feel seen or doesn't want to be seen in the classroom. we're failing. 385 01:10:24.190 --> 01:10:24.890 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 386 01:10:27.630 --> 01:10:31.030 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. And next up Dana Owens. 387 01:10:34.510 --> 01:10:48.159 WLWV Board Room: Hi, I'm Dana Owens, and I've been a part of our community from my kids being in kindergarten all the way up to now, a junior and a senior, and thank you, Kelly, for all your help that you've helped me. 388 01:10:48.190 --> 01:10:59.459 WLWV Board Room: I come here tonight second time. I've come to a board meeting. One was like maybe a year ago, and then, now and I come 389 01:11:01.020 --> 01:11:09.810 WLWV Board Room: from a heart of love and from a heart of a mom. a mom who 390 01:11:11.820 --> 01:11:18.610 WLWV Board Room: found out at the end of last year, and I love our schools, and I love our teachers, and I love our principles. 391 01:11:18.690 --> 01:11:20.900 WLWV Board Room: But I found out that 392 01:11:22.160 --> 01:11:29.410 WLWV Board Room: Boys were being allowed to go into girls. Bathrooms 393 01:11:29.630 --> 01:11:33.140 WLWV Board Room: did not know that this was being allowed. 394 01:11:33.630 --> 01:11:38.499 WLWV Board Room: as from a mother who's been abused in her past. We know. 395 01:11:38.770 --> 01:11:43.309 WLWV Board Room: Girls don't speak up email boys, don't speak up. We know that 396 01:11:43.340 --> 01:11:47.560 WLWV Board Room: the evidence is there. I 397 01:11:47.630 --> 01:11:58.410 WLWV Board Room: I reached out. I didn't know what to do. I don't have a lot of energy in my life right now, and what I was told to do is basically 398 01:11:59.240 --> 01:12:01.280 WLWV Board Room: presented in a certain way 399 01:12:01.290 --> 01:12:04.130 WLWV Board Room: that it pleases everyone. So 400 01:12:04.320 --> 01:12:16.630 WLWV Board Room: this is how I'm presenting it. We talk about everyone needs to be treated fairly. Everyone has rights. But do they do? Girls have rights. 401 01:12:17.820 --> 01:12:18.940 WLWV Board Room: And 402 01:12:19.170 --> 01:12:32.140 WLWV Board Room: I would say, more people need. I know it's a Federal law that people who associate themselves as the opposite sex can go into girls bathrooms. I'm seeing videos from our 403 01:12:32.400 --> 01:12:45.330 WLWV Board Room: high school here in Wilsonville. and people don't speak up because they don't want to be made fun of. We're here to protect our kids. I'm here to protect my kids. 404 01:12:45.410 --> 01:12:53.350 WLWV Board Room: my kids. And when people are kids are afraid to speak up or adults are afraid to speak up who's protecting our kids. 405 01:12:54.080 --> 01:12:56.349 WLWV Board Room: who is protecting our kids. 406 01:12:56.480 --> 01:13:03.790 WLWV Board Room: And so if all are meant to be feel safe, if all are meant to feel safe. 407 01:13:04.170 --> 01:13:06.610 WLWV Board Room: then if we're not gonna allow 408 01:13:06.660 --> 01:13:12.059 WLWV Board Room: a special bathroom for different people who identify as whatever. 409 01:13:12.330 --> 01:13:14.109 WLWV Board Room: Then how about the girls 410 01:13:14.330 --> 01:13:28.579 WLWV Board Room: having more bathrooms, boys having more private bathrooms? So I don't know how to go around and to get how to make this change, but we need more private bathrooms if we're going to include all for safety. 411 01:13:28.950 --> 01:13:29.850 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 412 01:13:32.890 --> 01:13:39.749 WLWV Board Room: Thank you very much. Oh, and I think one more addition. Yeah. So is. 413 01:13:40.070 --> 01:13:42.410 WLWV Board Room: I'll I'll fill it out for you. Go for it. 414 01:13:46.390 --> 01:14:12.319 WLWV Board Room: Thank you for letting me come up. I wanted to take a moment, and first thank you, Kathy or Dr. Ludwig, for mentioning dyslexic today. I felt like I had a moment of exhale after the last year, and I appreciate for once, I'm like, Wow! Are we moving together? Are we actually? Have we been heard? Are we going to the next phase of this and I just wanna take a moment to talk about elevate and what that means to me. 415 01:14:12.400 --> 01:14:19.290 WLWV Board Room: And for me, I'm gonna ask you, because you're going into your board goals in a couple, you know, the next week. 416 01:14:19.310 --> 01:14:29.880 WLWV Board Room: and I'm gonna ask you to do a couple of things or think about a couple of things which means putting measurable goals in there. Set standards, follow the data. 417 01:14:30.050 --> 01:14:40.940 WLWV Board Room: share the data. follow the research and put the evidence into practice. This can be part of your board goals. And as a community without following what works. 418 01:14:41.080 --> 01:14:51.920 WLWV Board Room: Then we're just gonna be going in circles. And I don't want to go in circles anymore for any of these kids. We can actually do this together. The other thing that I want to talk about that I'm gonna actually 419 01:14:52.090 --> 01:14:59.370 WLWV Board Room: I would love to see in practice is a special Ed advisory parent committee. 420 01:14:59.670 --> 01:15:09.619 WLWV Board Room: We know our kids best. We see the challenges. I think that we have the right to have a voice in the system 421 01:15:10.850 --> 01:15:12.220 WLWV Board Room: we can help. 422 01:15:12.450 --> 01:15:23.369 WLWV Board Room: We know what works. We know it doesn't work. We we monitor every day in our household. We want to be a part of it. We want a voice in the process of the this this district. We don't. 423 01:15:23.880 --> 01:15:27.850 WLWV Board Room: We deserve to be a part of it. And we don't have that in this community. 424 01:15:28.280 --> 01:15:42.050 WLWV Board Room: It's a big piece that's missing. These kids deserve it. And I know that you want parents voices. So let's go ahead and make it a formal process where parents can be more involved in a way that maybe we can have better results. 425 01:15:42.930 --> 01:15:49.680 WLWV Board Room: The other thing I also want to ask is that you put in a formal committee for interventions. 426 01:15:50.000 --> 01:15:59.800 WLWV Board Room: We are looking at the Ela curriculum. However. they say that we are going to be looking into the intervention system as well. We need to adopt 427 01:15:59.960 --> 01:16:08.020 WLWV Board Room: intervention systems. These should be talked about and looked at. It is a part of the curriculum. We have our tier, one and tier, 2 curriculum. 428 01:16:08.200 --> 01:16:19.539 WLWV Board Room: and then we also need to look at the other side. Every kid in every school. from every classroom. Any learning specialists should have the right 429 01:16:19.630 --> 01:16:23.410 WLWV Board Room: to the same access to evidence-based 430 01:16:23.540 --> 01:16:26.100 WLWV Board Room: intervention that works. 431 01:16:26.820 --> 01:16:36.560 WLWV Board Room: It shouldn't be that hard. This is also going to give you the crossover. If everybody is on the same language, just like the science of reading language. If everybody's on the same language 432 01:16:36.760 --> 01:16:41.479 WLWV Board Room: we can ensure outcomes. If a teacher's gone, they know exactly where they are. 433 01:16:41.750 --> 01:16:42.510 WLWV Board Room: It's 434 01:16:43.650 --> 01:16:49.770 WLWV Board Room: it's not rocket science. We can do this. Let's look into it. Please set up an advisory committee. Thank you. 435 01:16:51.700 --> 01:16:58.290 WLWV Board Room: Alright. And that concludes all of our public comments. Just a quick reminder. 436 01:16:58.290 --> 01:17:21.710 WLWV Board Room: the board has. We have our retreat next week on the twenty-twond the first day of school is on the 20, ninth, and I know that will be exciting for all of us parents and staff and teachers. And then our next regular meeting is on September eleventh at 60'clock and September. We also have a work session. So with those updates. I will adjourn tonight's meeting. Thanks. Everyone for coming.
